Entering Europe in a new way: from October 2025, the EU will implement the ETIAS system.
From October 2025, the countries of the European Union will implement a new border control system: ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System). This means that citizens of dozens of countries who previously entered the Schengen area without a visa will now have to obtain an electronic entry permit in advance.
If you are planning a trip to Europe on vacation, a business meeting or visiting relatives, this information is important for you.
What is ETIAS?
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is an electronic authorization that will become mandatory for all foreign citizens who do not have a visa but have the right to travel to the EU without a visa for up to 90 days.
This system does not replace the visa, but is applied in addition to the existing rules.
It is issued entirely online, on a special EU platform.
Indispensable for travel for tourism, business, study and transit purposes.
Who needs ETIAS?
The system applies to citizens of more than 60 countries, including:
* Ukraine (biometric passport holders)
* Georgia
* Moldavia
* Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia
* Israel
* United Kingdom
* Kanada
* USA
* Australia and others.
The full list can be found on the official EU website.
What information is needed to submit an application?
To obtain permission, you must fill out the form and indicate:
Personal information (full name, date of birth, nationality)
Passport data
Contact Information
Estimated travel dates and countries
Answers to questions about health, criminal record, purpose of travel
How much does ETIAS cost and how long does it take to process it?
Cost: 7 euros (free for children under 18 and seniors over 70)
Processing time: from a few minutes to 96 hours
Validity: 3 years or until the expiration date of the passport
What happens if I do not apply to ETIAS?
If you do not get an electronic permit:
You will not be allowed to board a plane or bus to the EU
You may be denied entry at the border
Airlines and carriers will have to check their permit before boarding
Even the existence of a valid Schengen visa-free agreement does not exempt you from ETIAS.
Why is the EU implementing this system?
Among the reasons:
- Increasing security
- Combating illegal migration
- Protection against threats and simplification of border control
- Digitalization of entry processes
ETIAS is similar to systems already in place, such as the US (ESTA) or Canada (eTA).
